Darci Kistler retires...

First the tutu, now we are seriouly coming to the end of an era. The New York Times is reporting that Darci Kistler, the last remaining ballerina at New York City Ballet to have been molded and hired by its co-founder George Balanchine, plans to retire in the 2010 season. She started at the tender age of 17 under the ballet genious and after 28 years of aches and pains, she is taking her pointes out of rotation. Ms. Kistler’s career has been marked by injuries, but also by resilience. She came back from a severe ankle injury in 1982 and then back surgery about nine years ago, to correct a hereditary condition that caused a ruptured disk and threatened a nerve. Although Balanchine never choreographed a role for her, Ms. Kistler danced central parts in most of his creations, including “Agon,” “Apollo,” “Symphony in C,” “Concerto Barocco” and “Vienna Waltzes.”
Her plan for retirement: spending time with her daughter and her husband, Peter Martins, New York City Ballet’s ballet master in chief...end of an era indeed
